Dubai’s RTA Announces Major Upgrade for Umm Suqeim Street

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) today announced a comprehensive upgrade of Umm Suqeim Street. It stretches from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, which has been experiencing some traffic congestion. The project is part of the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor Master Plan, a 20-kilometre-long major thoroughfare. The most important feature of this route is that it connects Dubai’s key residential and commercial areas from east to west.

1# Increased traffic capacity and reduced travel time

  • The project will double the capacity of Umm Suqeim Street, which will be able to handle 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
  • The travel time from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road will be reduced from 20 minutes to just 6 minutes. This is a huge change and also convenience for people.
  • Currently, the 4.6-kilometer section from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is 70% complete and will open in the third quarter of 2025.

2# Upgrading of six major intersections

The project includes the reconstruction of five major intersections, which will include:

  1. It will include four new bridges and three tunnels with a total length of 4,100 meters.
  2. A two-lane tunnel on Jumeirah Street and another tunnel on Al Wasl Street, which will ease traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road.
  3. Two new bridges will be built on Sheikh Zayed Road, which will relieve rush hour traffic.
  4. There will be a tunnel on First Al Khail Street, which will ease traffic from Al Barsha towards Sheikh Zayed Road.
  5. The section from First Al Khail Street to Al Aseel Street will be widened to four lanes.

3# Better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists

There is also good news for pedestrians because in addition to the road expansion, the project includes:

  • Modern pedestrian paths and dedicated cycle tracks will be built here.
  • Complete streets (called wards) that will promote urban life.
  • Direct connection of Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to nearby residential areas, improving last-mile accessibility.

4# Use of smart technology and AI

5# Widespread impacts on Dubai’s road network

The Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor will connect four major highways:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Al Khail Road
  • Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road
  • Emirates Road.

The project will benefit more than two million residents, including the areas of Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Shaif, and Al Quoz.


Phased construction and future plans

Al Qudra Road Upgrade
  • Phase 1 70% complete: Focusing on a 4.6km section, which includes an 800m tunnel near King’s School in Al Barsha South.
  • Al Qudra Road Upgrade: A parallel project includes a 2,700-meter bridge and 11.6 kilometers of road width, which will make travel easier. Upon completion of this project, travel time will be reduced from 9.4 minutes to 2.8 minutes.
  • Future plans: The extension of Emirates Road and new service roads will improve access to Arabian Ranches, Dubai Studio City, and other development projects.
